Australian super guide

What to check before making extra super contributions

Adding to super can be valuable, but contribution types and annual caps matter. A simple calculator can show amounts; it cannot confirm that a contribution is right for you.

Know the contribution type

Employer super guarantee and salary sacrifice are commonly concessional contributions. Personal contributions can be concessional or non-concessional depending on how they are made and claimed. The categories have different rules.

Check caps and available carry-forward amounts

Exceeding a cap can have tax consequences. The relevant caps, eligibility and any carry-forward arrangement depend on the tax year and your circumstances, so check the ATO information before changing an arrangement.

Remember access and fees

Money contributed to super is usually preserved until a condition of release is met. Investment performance, insurance and fund fees also affect the eventual balance. Read the ATO's growing your super guidance for the current rules.
